The Southern Conference (SoCon) is one of the nation's oldest NCAA Division I athletic conferences, established on February 25, 1921, in Atlanta when 14 institutions split from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Now in its 105th year, the SoCon is the fifth-oldest major college athletic conference in the United States and holds a particularly notable place in history as the parent conference that spawned both the Southeastern Conference (which broke away in 1932) and the Atlantic Coast Conference (which formed in 1953). The conference currently fields 10 full members located across six southeastern states, with football teams competing in the FCS. The SoCon is a pioneer in college athletics — it held the first postseason college basketball tournament in 1921 (the oldest in continuous existence), became the first conference to use the three-point field goal in basketball in 1980, and developed women's championships beginning in 1983-84. The conference sponsors 21 varsity sports and is one of only two all-sports conferences in the country to sponsor rifle. The SoCon has produced some of college athletics' most iconic figures, including NBA legend Jerry West of West Virginia, golf great Arnold Palmer of Wake Forest, and Stephen Curry of Davidson, who led the Wildcats to the Elite Eight in 2008 before becoming a four-time NBA champion and two-time MVP. In football, former member Appalachian State became the first FCS team to defeat a nationally ranked FBS opponent when it stunned No. 5 Michigan 34-32 in 2007. Mercer has won back-to-back SoCon football championships in 2024 and 2025. The conference is headquartered in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and is led by Commissioner Michael Cross.
